Trees in a Sea of Darkness

This project started on a dark, rural country road. Every time, on my way home at night from a local drive-in in SC, I would see this lone tree lit up in a field. I then started noticing other interesting trees in the night. This got me thinking, why as humans we do not explore the night more. Maybe because the dark is not easy to render. Though, mostly, I believe it is because we don’t understand it and our primal fear of it.

So, is the darkness around me something to fear, dread, and worry about? Or are there positive aspects? I found it can be a time for rest, contemplation, and rejuvenation. The dark can also be calming, peaceful, and a way to minimize distractions. I decided there might be a different story to tell of the dark.

I challenged myself to ventured out into the night to find ways the darkness was showcasing beauty, style, and elegance, not hiding it. To emphasize the darkness around these trees, I chose to photograph this project in black and white.
